- Sir Nikolai, new hotel in Hamburg
The Sir Nikolai hotel is the perfect place to stay if you decide to visit Hamburg to take in the new Elbphilharmonie, popular destination for lovers of iconic architecture and fine music, and to enjoy all the cultural initiatives and exhibitions like the ones at the Deichtorhallen, the Kunsthalle or the MKG, just to mention some of the more active institutions.
This is the fourth SIR Hotel by Liran Weizman, and the second in Germany. Sir Nikolai is named after its location - the inner-city canal of Nikolaifleet - and is the end result of a project by Dutch studio FG Stijl. They have converted this historical “Kontorhaus” - warehouse - into an elegant, modern space that formally and conceptually reaches out to the historical and urban context of Hamburg. And all the city highlights are within easy walking distance.
In the hotel's interior, the FG Stijl design team have turned their ideas into spaces showcasing the traditional local features of the Hanseatic merchants, like the passion for quality right down to the finest detail, the clear awareness of their roots, the open mind of seasoned travellers.
Instead of the classic, anonymous lobby, here you enter straight into a library with an open fireplace, large bookshelves and cosy lounge area, where you just want to hang around and enjoy the company.
Sir Nikolai follows the same philosophy as all the SIR hotels: a balanced combination of repurposing a historical building, distinctive interior design and entertainment planning that embraces the local community. For example, the hotel sources many of the artworks and photographs hanging on its walls from local art galleries.
