Green produce warehouse comes to Chicago

This new industrial warehouse for Testa Produce in Chicago, Illinois is sure to raise environmental awareness with its highly visible green building features. Epstein provided its architectural design, civil engineering and LEED consulting expertise for this green project which is expected to be one of the most sustainable facilities of its kind and the first LEED-NC Platinum Grocery Distribution Facility.

The project includes a 91,300-square-foot warehouse, 20,000 feet of Class A office space, 40 truck docks and even a charging station for electric vehicles. A 45,000-square-foot green roof will span the facility, which will rely on renewable energy sources including solar panels and a 750kW wind turbine standing 238 feet tall, Chicago’s first large-scale urban wind turbine.
The project also includes LED lighting, sun-tracking solar skylights,100% solar hot water and a rainwater collection system relying on cisterns, bioswales and a retention pond.
Recycled and reused building materials were widely used in construction and recycling will continue to be emphasized in the facility’s daily operations. Furthermore, this major produce distributor has also pledged to make an effort to support local agriculture.
