Blending into the landscape. Lehmann Izquierdo Architects
A holiday home on the Chilean coast makes total integration with the landscape around it its strong point, sheltering the home from the strong southwesterlies.

Chilean architectural studio Lehmann Izquierdo Arquitectos always demonstrates a particular awareness of harmonious inclusion of its buildings in their surroundings.

The “home in Huentelauquén”, a fishing village on the Pacific Ocean 270 km north of Santiago, is 40 metres above the beach, but all we can see of the home from the street is 5 chimneys that look like lookouts over the ocean.

The bedrooms on the ground floor are lined up to enjoy the view of the sea, while the kitchen and bathrooms are located on the sides, where there is more privacy, and the living and dining rooms are glassed-in on both sides so that they seem to float between the horizon and the patio dug into the earth at the heart of the construction.

Its bare stone containing walls shelter the home from the strong southwest wind, while the glass walls of the living room ensure that even the patio has a view of the Pacific Ocean.

A covered gallery along the patio leads to the children’s and guests’ bedrooms. Underneath the living and dining rooms is another hall with a terrace over the beach, accessible via the patio passing through the indoor stairway.

The terrace is designed not to interfere with the view from the hall above it: every room has a free view of the sea, as nature is seen not so much as a backdrop but as an integral part of the architectural design.
