LAC Lugano Arte Cultura designed by architect Ivano Gianola opens

An unusual opening, three weekends long, with a packed calendar of events from 12th-26th Septemberpresents the new LAC Lugano Arte Cultura arts centre, designed by architect Ivano Gianola, winner of the 2001 international design competition to create the building, to the public.

LAC is a place where various artistic disciplines meet and combine and the architect translates this vocation into architecture in which the boundary between the interior and exterior is reduced to a minimum. It is a building that is open to the city and aims to become its new, vital heart.
For example, the large hall that welcomes visitors is perceived as a wide window onto the newpiazza Bernardino Luini that connects LAC to the lake and to the sixteenth century Church of Saint Mary of the Angels and the Convent of the Franciscan Brothers Minor.
From the hall you can access the three-floor exhibition space and the theatre and concert space, which thanks to a series of modular solutions can be adapted to host various kinds of performances. The arts centre also has other spaces like the Teatrostudio, various multifunctional rooms, the Agorà, an outdoor amphitheatre, Spazio -1, which houses a collection of modern art and a multi-storey car park under the square with various site-specific works byartist Felice Varini, as well as spaces that have been redeveloped and restored in the ancient convent of the Franciscan Brothers Minor, and the new public park which can be accessed directly from the hall.
