The winner of the fifteen YAP has been announced: the Hy-Fi project by The Living (David Benjamin).
The annual programme for young architects promoted by MoMA and MoMA PS1 in New York requires plans for a temporary installation for the courtyard outside the MoMA PS1. The project must comply with a number of guidelines pertaining to sustainability and recycling of materials.
The Hy-Fi project by The Living is a round tower of biotech bricks. The structure is made of 100% organic material to minimise waste production and energy consumption.
The bricks were made out of maize plants, an innovative project invented by Ecovative in collaboration with The Living.
Compared to traditional brick buildings, Hy-Fi seems to defy the laws of gravity, because the thinnest, most porous organic bricks are used at the base of the tower, while the bricks at the top appear to be heavier, reflecting natural light downwards thanks to a special film created by 3M.
