Helsinki Design Week 2016 – Key events

Helsinki Design Week is northern Europe’s biggest festival of design. First held in 2005, the event is now in its eleventh edition and has a busier calendar of events than ever. Helsinki Design Week 2016 will take place September 1 through 11, and while the complete list of events will be published at www.helsinkidesignweek.com in August, here at Floornature.com we have had a sneak preview of some of the most important events. More than 120,000 visitors are expected to attend HDW this year, with a choice of over 200 events. Some of the most important of these include: the Design Market, northern Europe’s biggest design market featuring 200 carefully selected design brands, while HDW HOP – City Installations involves creation of a series of installations in the city centre. For example? Plastique Fantastique of Berlin will create a giant soap bubble around the statue The Three Smiths.

Design Diplomacy will be a series of meetings and discussions hosted in the embassies of various different European nations, held during card games conceived specifically for the occasion.
The ever-present Open Studios event offers everyone a chance to visit architecture and creative design studios in northern Europe’s design capital. During the weekend, while grown-ups visit Helsinki Design Week, children will be able to play at the HDW Children's Weekend, for the designers of tomorrow.
