Waterhouse – dialogue with nature

Architect Li Xiaodong’s poetics involve use of traditional materials and building techniques. His simple architectural vocabulary permits use of local unspecialised labour, in accordance with the architect’s ideal commitment to the region.

Waterhouse – dialogue with nature The Waterhouse is a poetic private home designed by architect Li Xiaodong on the slopes of the snowy Yulong mountains. The building fits into the natural landscape in a panoramic location with a view of the ancient city of Lijiang, an important centre of trade along the Tea Road. The architect takes great care with spatial design and the creation of atmosphere, favouring the overall view rather than decorative details. The building visually forms a part of the environment and the view, but is physically separated from it by structural elements such as the stone wall or the swimming pool, in which the artificial construction and the natural landscape are both reflected.
