UNStudio’s Lane 189, new spaces for retail and relaxation in Shanghai
Lane 189 is the new project by UNStudio in Putuo, an area in the centre of Shanghai. The building is a new shopping centre that develops vertically, with all the functions needed in a complex of this kind and contains the multiform, fragmented soul of Shanghai.
The design includes elements of "old Shanghai", in a contemporary reality. Ben van Berkel and UNStudio have produced an urban interior . The space has an open layer around a large, central empty space. Each floor has little restaurants and boutiques that alternative with kiosks and rest areas, all of which creates a pleasant layout for visitors.
The iconic façade of the building is based on a hexagonal grid. This network allows the components of the façade to adapt to the changing geometry of the building and to give ever-changing public perspectives. The lower part of the grid components is diamond-shaped and lit by RGB LED to create sparkling visual effects that are monochrome and multi-coloured, transparent and opaque. The architects have placed double-height openings in the façade, nicknamed "urban eyes". These “eyes” have the dual function of being both ‘showcases’ for products and balconies for wide views of the surroundings.
