‘From the Earth, For the Earth’ is the theme of World Horticultural Expo 2014, developed in the Theme Pavilion designed by UNStudio.
Architect Ben van Berkel and UNStudio were asked to design the pavilion after winning an international design competition in 2011.
The pavilion’s shape fits into the surrounding landscape and reminds us of “a flower”. The structure’s roofs recall the plateaus of the mountains nearby, and have different inclinations and terracing to provide different panoramic views. A series of indoor and outdoor walkways links the four petals making up the structure. These four parts of the complex are arranged around the central plaza which forms the heart of the project.
The façade is covered with aluminium panels with vertical folds in different colours depending on the viewer’s point of view: green, yellow, orange and blue. Each colour is used on only one side of the façade, with a gradual transition from one colour to another at the corners of the structure.
