The first phase in SUTD, the Singapore University of Technology & Design designed by architectural studios UNStudio and DP Architects was recently completed. Concepts such as connection, collaboration, co-creation, innovation and socialisation, considered keys to contemporary education, are the basic elements inspiring the architecture of SUTD.
The university campus is located in an area measuring about 83,000 square metres near Singapore’s biggest airport and Changi Business Park. The architects designed a complex of five interconnected buildings, and the first phase included construction of buildings 1 and 2, plus part of buildings 3 and 5. Architect Ben van Berkel of UNStudio notes that the key elements in the project are quality infrastructure, connectivity, and creation of an open, transparent, lightweight structure responding to the needs of a contemporary campus.
The constructions are built on the basis of principles of environmental sustainability and use architectural elements and design strategies to combat Singapore’s challenging climate passively: natural ventilation, optimal orientation of the buildings, sunshades, covered pedestrian pathways, etc.
The project fits into the natural landscape of Singapore and its colours with façades concealing colourful flowerbeds, hanging gardens and green patios on which plants and trees native to the area are grown.
