In Greenwich Village, Manhattan, the architects of UNStudio explore possibilities for interaction between public gallery space and private living space in a loft.

UNStudio Collector’s Loft, New York, USA Renovation of a loft in Greenwich Village in Manhattan gave architect Ben van Berkel with Arjan Dingste, Marianthi Tatari and Collette Parras of Unstudio of the Netherlands an opportunity to explore possibilities for interaction between public gallery space and the private living space of a home. The loft has a large, elongated surface but is not very high. To divide up the space proportionately and characterise different areas, the architects divided the ceiling into bright and opaque areas and articulated the floor plan with curved walls. The result is large spaces for private life with a big vertical surface for art exhibitions. To complete the whole, the existing windows were replaced with walls made entirely out of glass overlooking downtown Manhattan.
