Plastic: the counter-revolution! The debate is open

A major exhibition entitled Plastic: Remaking Our World is underway at the Vitra Design Museum, investigating one of the phenomena most characteristic of the past century: the development of plastic, and its transformation from resource into global problem. Can we make it fully recyclable? Will we be able to live without it in the future? Will we be able to clean up the world? Here are the opinions of some key participants in the debate.

Objects, designs and materials are on display at the Vitra Design Museum Gallery in the exhibition "Memphis: 40 Years of Kitsch and Elegance”, that recounts the world and history of Memphis, the legendary group of Italian designers formed to overturn the dogmas of functionalism which then dominated industrial design, which, although short-lived (from 1981 to 1987), had considerable international influence.

Vitra Design Museum - German Design 1949–1989 Two Countries, One History Exhibition

Following the long closure imposed by regulations put in place to help contain the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, on March 20 the Vitra Design Museum will finally reopen its spaces to the public with "German Design 1949–1989 Two Countries, One History", the first exhibition that takes a close look at the post-war design of the two divided Germanies. The works on display cover a range of different design areas and, in some cases, are considered true icons of their reference sectors. The result is a rather interesting comparative analysis between the ideological and aesthetic differences that characterised East and West, but also of the parallels and the interrelationships between the two.

Piet Oudolf designs Perennial Garden on Vitra Campus, in Weil am Rhein

The construction of the Perennial Garden, a large 4,000-square metre garden began in May 2020. It was designed by Piet Oudolf, the famous Dutch landscape architect who created important public parks such as the New York High Line, the Hauser & Wirth Somerset gallery, the Serpentine Galleries and the Venice Biennale. The new garden will be built on the meadow that stretches between the VitraHaus designed by Herzog & de Meuron and the Vitra production centre designed by Álvaro Siza.

Home Stories: 100 Years, 20 Visionary Interiors exhibition at Vitra Design Museum

The spotlight will be on contemporary interiors, starting with a look at the recent past, at the Vitra Design Museum following the 6 February opening of the exhibition "Home Stories: 100 Years, 20 Visionary Interiors", looking back at 20 iconic interiors designed by prominent architects including Adolf Loos, Finn Juhl, Lina Bo Bardi and Assemble, artists such as Andy Warhol and Cecil Beaton, and interior designers such as Elsie de Wolfe.
