Rafiq Azam: family tomb in Bangladesh

Rafiq Azam builds a family tomb in Noakhali, in southern Bangladesh. The architect views the tomb as a gateway between earth and heaven, reflected in the shape of the concrete cornice framing a stand of betel palms, the vertical lines of which contrast with the horizontal line of the roof. The project includes a single bench on which to sit in prayer before the grassy meadow where the dead are buried.

Never sensationalist, Eduardo Souto de Moura’s architecture is determined by choices linked with the landscape, the meaning of the work and the details of the materials. These intentions are clearly expressed in his plan for Paula Rêgo Museum in Cascais, with its red cement, glass permitting contemplation of details and two pyramidal roofs making the building an architectural symbol in the landscape.
