David Chipperfield Architects refurbishes the Neue Nationalgalerie designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

The Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, an icon of the Modern Movement designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe has been restored by David Chipperfield Architects Berlin. It is the last project, as well as the only building designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in Europe after emigrating to the USA. A virtual ceremony was held on April 29 to inaugurate the refurbished building, while the museum is set to reopen its doors to the public in August 2021.

Berliners have been gifted a lovely end-of-year surprise. The Neue Nationalgalerie, first designed by Mies van der Rohe, is slated to reopen to the general public in August 2021 after years of restoration work by David Chipperfield Architects, and the swathes of fabric protecting this icon of modern architecture have finally been removed.

David Chipperfield Architects’ conversion and recovery of a historic complex - Jacoby Studios in Paderborn

The Jacoby Studios complex in Paderborn, in western Germany, was originally a Capuchin monastery, built in the 17th century and converted into a hospital in 1841. David Chipperfield Architects Berlin have reclaimed the historic construction, eliminating the post-war changes and additions, and converted it to provide a new headquarters for the company Tap Holding. The project has been nominated for the 2021 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award.

David Chipperfield Architects design the Carmen Würth Forum in Künzelsau, Germany

On June 28, the "Carmen Würth Forum" cultural and congress centre opened its doors to the public. The complex was designed for the Adolf Würth firm in the town of Künzelsau, Germany, by the Berlin office of David Chipperfield Architects. The intervention that was recently concluded is a "second phase", an extension that includes a congress area and an art museum which completes the concert and event halls inaugurated in 2017 and also designed by the Berlin-based David Chipperfield Architects firm.

In 2012, three historic buildings in the centre of London, between Regent Street and Piccadilly Circus, were converted into the new Hotel Café Royal in an important architectural project by David Chipperfield Architects in partnership with restoration studio Donald Insall Associates. Lissoni Casal Ribeiro’s project fits into this conversion project, renewing all the common areas in the hotel with elements of contemporary design while preserving the memory of the place.

Starting on 31 January 2020, Frankfurt’s DAM Deutsches Architekturmuseum hosts an exhibition about the projects entered for the DAM Preis 2020, a competition for the best architecture in Germany held since 2007. The winning project in 2020 is the James Simon Galerie in Berlin, designed by David Chipperfield Architects.

Winners of the Barbara Cappochin International Prize for Architecture

The Barbara Cappochin International Prize for Architecture goes to Fasch & Fuchs Architekten design studio for the Aspern Federal School. "Cava Arcari", the multi-purpose space at Colli Berici (the hills around Vicenza) designed by David Chipperfield Architects wins the Regional Award. The award ceremony will take place on October 26 at the Palazzo della Ragione in Padova.
