The Campbell Sports Center designed by Steven Holl Architects and completed in the spring of 2013 was recently awarded the AIANY Design Award for architecture.
The building is the portal to the Baker Athletics Complex at Columbia University in New York.
The project revolves around a two-storey high area where students train. The project is based on three essential concepts: body, body/mind, mind, which determine the layering of various different functions. The steel structure and its joints are made visible inside the building with openings in the coverings.
Steven Holl has redesigned a forgotten corner and returned it to the city. The building creates and is perceived through urban views. The abstract façade of the Campbell Sports Center blends in with the cityscape around it, particularly the raised metro tracks and the Broadway Lift Bridge visible in the distance.
