Steven Holl’s recently approved project involves construction of a new Arrival Hall for ChinPaoSan Necropolis as well as an "Oceanic Pavilion" incorporating areas for Buddhist ceremonies and a 5000 seat amphitheatre. The site is in a location with a beautiful view of the ocean not far from Taipei.
Research into the symbolism of the sphere in different religions and study of the intersection of circles as in the Borromei rings underlie Steven Holl’s project.
White cement spheres at different heights intersect on a rectangular surface covered with a pool of water. Only a few centimetres below the surface of the water, photovoltaic panels provide 60% of the buildings' energy: the perfect solution, as the water cooling the system increases its efficiency by 20%.
Construction of the complex will begin in May 2015.
