For the 2006 Asian Games (2-15 December), the city of Doha, capital of the small but wealthy country of Qatar, has undergone an urban transformation that in a short time has given it new sports structures and hotels - many of which have soon become powerful urban icons.

Sports City Tower. Doha (Qatar). Hadi Simaan. 2006 One of these is the Sports City Tower, designed by the American Hadi Simaan and the Frenchman Etienne Tricaud of the Arep Studio.
At 300 metres tall it is the highest building in Qatar, while its size means that it houses not only a large luxury hotel, but also a sports museum and a top-floor restaurant with a panoramic view of the city overlooking the sea.
The building is not only distinctive because of its height. The steel mesh structure forming the tower, reduces slightly on one side to create a gentle curve and half-moon profile. This solution was employed not only for the appearance of the building, but was also planned by the Arep Studio designers to create "natural" protection from the sun¿s rays.

The metal mesh also protects against the wind while, at the same time, allowing the passage of natural light that helps heat the interior.
