In the centre of Potsdamer Platz, not far from the line once traced by the Berlin Wall, the Sony Center is both an important symbol of the modernisation of the city and one of the key elements in the new urban development of the German capital.

Sony Center - Helmut Jahn<br> Berlin The plaza is surrounded by five buildings, four of which have rounded surfaces following the perimeter of the Forum and are covered with mirrors to create unusual light effects as they interact with the tent-like roof.
The building with the greatest visual impact on Potsdamer Strasse is the FilmMuseum, containing exhibition halls and theatres dedicated to the history of cinema. Of particular interest is the Esplanade Residence, which rose out of the ruins of the Esplanade Hotel, destroyed in World War II.
Some parts of the old hotel have been entirely rebuilt, while others have been enclosed in glass to make them visible from the outside. The other buildings are the Imax theatre and a series of residential units and offices.
