Solar City, Linz, Austria The city of Linz assigned the task of designing the first 630 homes to architects of the calibre of Norman Foster, Richard Rogers and Thomas Herzog, who has been a pioneer of sustainable construction since the '70s.
Assisted by German engineer Norbert Kaiser, who specialises in environmental technological engineering, the group called itself READ group (Renewable Energy in Architecture and Design). The project also benefited from the consulting services of Renzo Piano's studio.
The plans were completed last year, and only a few months ago construction began on this city within a city, a 'Solar City Linz' with homes for about 25,000 people.
This is the largest ever settlement built on the basis of the tenets of sustainable architecture. The basic principle underlying the project is the desire to promote low cost building methods internationally.
