Roland Baldi 20 years 1 book

A boundless passion for good architecture, in which beauty plays a social role: this sums up Roland Baldi’s book presenting 20 years of work by award-winning South Tyrol studio Roland Baldi Architects.
As we leaf through the 176 page book, we see not only homes but plenty of infrastructure and public works projects testifying to the architect’s sensitivity to his homeland, evident in his award-winning Merano 2000 cableway, his road maintenance logistics centres for the Autonomous Province of Bolzano and his district heating plant in Chiusa.
As Valerio Dehò writes in his preface to Baldi’s book, all these projects respond to the challenge “of making beauty a social asset”.
As architect Wolfang Piller emphasises in his essay, the projects emphasise substance over form, and are not narcissistic monuments to the idea that “nothing is impossible”, but works of architecture designed for the people who use them and the setting in which they are built. The material aspects of the projects demonstrate respect for their surroundings, because here beauty is not confused with mere appearances, but is a characteristic arising out of a sensible approach on the part of people who love the places where they work.
