Renzo Piano appointed senator for life

On August 30 the President of the Republic of Italy, Giorgio Napolitano, appointed 4 new senators for life: architect Renzo Piano, orchestra conductor Claudio Abbado, neurobiologist Elena Cattaneo and nuclear physicist Carlo Rubbia.

Renzo Piano is the first architect in the history of the Republic of Italy to be appointed senator for life, an honorary appointment made directly by the President of the Republic for Italian citizens who ?honour their homeland with great merit in the social, scientific, artistic and literary fields? (art.59, paragraph 2 of the Italian Constitution).

Renzo Piano?s great merit is demonstrated by the many international awards he has received in the course of his career, including the Pritzker Prize for architecture in 1998 and a Golden Lion for life-long achievement in 2000. In addition to the buildings he has constructed all over the world with the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, founded in 1981 after working with Richards Rogers (Piano&Rogers 1971) and Peter Rice (Piano&Rice Associates 1977), Piano?s most recent works include the Cetaceans Pavilion at Genoa Aquarium and the Muse Science Museum in Trento which opened in July 2013.
