Seven architectural practices were involved in a project for restyling a residential neighbourhood only minutes from the city centre in Rotterdam to create a new and more diverse “cityscape”.

New “cityscape” in Rotterdam. B05 by NL Architects

The Dutch architectural practice NL Architects was one of seven studios to work on the Nieuw Crooswijk area in Rotterdam on the basis of a masterplan by West 8. New residential and office buildings and shopping districts were built under the guidance of a single organising institution.

B05 is a building designed by NL Architects with 15 floors, the last five of which are set back to the north. This design solution permits creation of sunny patios while giving the building the unique shape that resulted in the nickname “Kuifie”, the Dutch name for the famous comic strip character Tintin. The building presents an architectural interpretation of his characteristic forelock.
