Neutelings & Riedijk Architecten: University of Minnaert, Utrecht, Holland, 1994-1997

Pavilions, University,

The Minnaert University building in Utrecht is one of the most significant recent works of architecture in the Netherlands: a magnificent specimen of modern architecture, elongated in form with projecting volumes at each end.

Neutelings & Riedijk Architecten: University of Minnaert, Utrecht, Holland, 1994-1997 The main entrance is practically hidden by the word "Minnaert", and is for pedestrians and cyclists only. Bicycles may be parked in a large area underneath the building.
A narrow staircase leads to a vast central space on the upper floor.
Most people probably enter the building through the walkways connected with adjacent buildings, offering services shared by the various departments.
The huge central atrium on the first floor is even more characteristic on the outside of the building: it is almost half occupied by a shallow pool, with the rest of the space set up like a large covered plaza which serves as a meeting place for students.
