Richard Rogers is about to complete construction of the National Assembly for Wales in Cardiff Bay. The project is the fruit of an international competition announced for Wales¿ new parliament building.

National Assembly for Wales <br> Richard Rogers PartnershipCardiff, under construction The Debating Chamber is the building?s physical and metaphorical heart: surrounded by public spaces, visually accessible to all, in direct contact with the community, the Chamber emerges from the base of the building in a bell-shape projecting above the line of the roof.

The roof is the other key to Rogers?s design, extending like a wooden cape over the public spaces and projecting beyond them toward the sea over an open area or plaza. The conical volume opening onto the slate base continues up to the roof and ends in a lantern.
When the new National Assembly of Wales building opens, Cardiff can boast a building that is highly innovative in terms of both vocabulary and content. At the same time, Rogers? project forges links with local history through use of traditional materials.
