MIPIM Awards, Green Building award presented to Mario Cucinella

The new 3M Italia office building designed by Mario Cucinella has won the 2011 MIPIM Award in the "Green Building" category. It is a sustainable building with carefully designed cladding which goes beyond the conventional idea of building plus climate control system to offer an integrated building/system.

Cucinella has produced a bioclimatic machine implementing all possible strategies for mitigating environmental impact and limiting annual energy consumption.
Renewable energy sources (photovoltaic) and careful design of opaque and transparent parts using screening systems which are differentiated according to the exposure of the façades.
To shelter the building from the summer heat and limit heat dispersion in winter, the architect has provided sunshades and glass on the eastern and western walls, with terraces on the southern wall.
