Milano Sottosopra exhibition at Expo Gate

November 1 1964 saw the inauguration of Milan’s first metro line, known as the “red line” after the colour used in the visual communications project (installation and signs) by Bob Noorda and Franco Albini.
To celebrate its fiftieth anniversary, Metropolitana Milanese is holding an exhibition entitled “Milano Sottosopra” at Expo Gate, Scandurra Studio’s pavilion in central Milan, across from Castello Sforzesco and right in front of the Cairoli MM1 metro station, where the first train went on the tracks in 1964.
Expo Gate is the place chosen to present the city’s identity in relation to the theme of Expo Milano 2015: “Feed the Planet: Energy for Life”, introducing this theme and accompanying visitors to the World’s Fair.
The Milano Sottosopra exhibition features a series of vintage photographs telling the story of the construction of the metro line and the profound transformation that it brought about, with a big open-air construction site stretching right across the city between 1957 and 1964, as documented in the film “Il posto” (1961) directed by Ermanno Olmi.
