McBride Charles Ryan, Penleigh and Essendon grammar school
The first thing that strikes us about the school building constructed by McBride Charles Ryan architectural studios, is its dark silhouette recalling a traditional Australian home, made particularly evident by the windowless solid brick wall. The school stands in a residential neighbourhood and the architects responded to the request for a functional yet “imaginative” building.

The building is extruded out of its silhouette and ends on the opposite side with a colourful striped wall, the parallel lines from which continue on the flooring inside and outside the building.

The ceiling of the school does not repeat the profile of the cusped roof, but is a soft line with rounded corners almost like a cloud.
This solution permits passive cooling of the building using natural ventilation, as air from outside penetrates the southern wall and hot air is expelled through the thermal stack.
