Mario Cucinella Architects has won a European Sustainability Award for "Workshop Ricostruzione", a project/programme created following the 2012 earthquake in Emilia Romagna. The programme involves five architectural projects which not only reconstruct what the earthquake destroyed but promote important values such as environmental quality, innovation, sustainability and beauty.

Mario Cucinella Architects wins a European Sustainability Award

On April 8, while architect Mario Cucinella was busy in Milan presenting the MateriAttiva installation produced by the Iris Ceramica Group in partnership with SOS – School of Sustainability and Mario Cucinella Architects, the European Sustainability Award Commission in Brussels presented a prize for small and medium enterprises to architect Marco dell’Agli, a partner in Mario Cucinella Architects. The award-winning project is “WorkShop Ricostruzione”, a programme including five initiatives implemented in response to the terrible earthquake that struck Emilia Romagna and Lombardy in 2012, particularly in the provinces of Bologna, Ferrara, Modena, Reggio Emilia and Mantua.
European Sustainability Awards are presented to seven projects implemented by people, enterprises or organisations in Europe that contribute to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The theme of the 2019 edition, "Strengthening people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality", attracted a total of 1489 candidacies from 24 different countries.

WorkShop Ricostruzione” was made possible by donations collected by the “Nuova Polis” Trust (Confindustria, Confservizi, CGIL, CISL and UIL), promoter of the “Trust Nuova Polis Onlus” solidarity fund. The Trust collected more than 7 million euro and funded five projects, which Mario Cucinella describes as "five beauty pills": five buildings constructed right in the heart of the crater produced by the earthquake. These include a sports and culture centre in Bondeno (Ferrara), a music centre in Pieve di Cento (Bologna), a school of dance in Reggiolo (Reggio Emilia), a recreational centre in Quistello (Mantua) and, finally, a social and medical centre in San Felice sul Panaro (Modena) due to open at the end of May 2019. The five buildings were designed by MC A Mario Cucinella Architects with six young professionals selected in the Workshop Ricostruzione project: five buildings that respond to the needs of the local population while adding to the beauty of the landscape. Architectural projects that reconstruct “not just what there was, where it was, but above all what is to come,” says Mario Cucinella, “with greater care, without making any compromises when it comes to earthquake safety and environment. Quality architecture promotes important values such as beauty, design, ecology, environmental quality, innovation, and sustainability, and helps add value to the land by establishing a new empathy with the landscape. Beauty is contagious!”.
