Hotel Mod05 consists of two overlapping buildings divided by a long strip of glass so that they barely touch. The compact but lightweight parallelepiped containing the rooms floats above the ground floor, the structure of which is divided up to reflect the complexity of its functions.
The material power of the volumes is enhanced by rough plaster surfaces treated with continuous finishes and colours both inside and out.
The volume containing the rooms is dematerialised: a second facade, made of wood, modulates the flow of light into the hotel rooms, selects the view and controls the flow of sunlight at different times of year.
The facade is designed to provide a double skin modulating light and the view while letting in light and saving energy: a large shutter which can be opened all the way from inside the rooms, consisting of phenolic panels cut into strips and mixed together to simulate the colour and appearance of wood in three shades: light and dark oak and chestnut. The result is an incredible texture that gives the facade a more natural look.
Materials are used to differentiate public and private areas. The ground floor (hall, restaurant, bar, kitchens, conference rooms, etc.) demanded a resistant, elegant but neutral material: GranitiFiandre pietra serena. On the outside, continuity is maintained with the interior with use of pietra basaltina, also by GranitiFiandre.
Format and laying scheme were carefully chosen: 120cm x 20cm laid “straight forward”.
The hotel rooms on the upper floors, on the other hand, have natural oak wooden flooring, except for the bathrooms, which feature a combination of white 10x30 ceramic tiles and chocolate-coloured GranitiFiandre porcelain stoneware tiles measuring 30x60 cm.
The hotel is different all the time: by day and by night, in different rooms, at different times of day.
