Taking a look at a third finalist in the Riba Stirling Prize, the Stockwell Street Building was designed by Heneghan Peng Architects for Greenwich University. The building stands in the area known as Maritime Greenwich, listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1997 for the quality and historic and architectural importance of its buildings.

This prestigious context and the importance of a building where Britain’s future architects and landscape architects will be educated were the key challenges addressed by Heneghan Peng Architects.

From the street, the Stockwell Street Building looks like a volume made up of smaller elements separated by courtyards and staircases. The interiors are brightly lit, with high ceilings and numerous large windows. The classrooms are located primarily on the underground levels, and are designed with careful choice of materials and details to make up for the absence of sunlight.
On the outside, on the wall off the street, the building is lower, with terraces with experimental gardens for the future landscape architects. The ground floor contains a gallery, café and shop with clear windows, making it clear that the structure is open to the public, and not only to university students.
