Foster + Partners United Arab Emirates UAE Pavilion Expo Milano 2015

Foster + Partners recreate the atmosphere of a traditional Arabian desert community in the United Arab Emirates pavilion at Expo Milano 2015.
Visitors enter the pavilion directly from the Decumanus, the main axis of the entire layout of Expo Milano 2015. The elongated lot allocated to the Arab Emirates allowed the architects to create an itinerary between walls 12 metres high and 140 metres long, recalling the narrow streets of ancient desert cities and the masterplan of Masdar City in Abu Dhabi.
The walls ware made from a scan of desert dunes to recreate the shapes and colours of sand dunes in the desert. A ramp takes visitors up to the auditorium, where the history of the Emirates unfolds through digital systems and interactive exhibits such as the one celebrating Dubai as the home of Expo 2020. The itinerary concludes in a green oasis evoking the land and flora of the Arab Emirates.
