Twice Light is a project Italian photographer Gianluca Vassallo conceived for New York Design Week 2015 when the well-known lighting brand invited him to participate to present its new showroom installation by architect and designer Ferruccio Laviani. In the “SpOts” installation Ferruccio Laviani transforms Foscarini’s Spazio Soho in New York into a big three-dimensional canvas in which new products are underlined by big blotches of colour. Outside, the street offers the ideal set for Vassallo’s Twice Light project.
In the photographer’s project, two unknown passers-by on a New York street are asked to stop under the same light and are then photographed. The aim is to “change the world, two people at a time”. Once they get over their initial discomfort, stopping and observing each other under the same light induces the two people to enter into a sort of harmony with each other, rediscovering a sense of shared humanity and overcoming the invisible barrier of diffidence and fear of the unknown.
