On the edge of the main square, ACMI
there is instead Australian Centre for the Moving Image
, the centre dedicated to moving images of all kinds. NGV Australia's Ian Potter Centre is the world's most important gallery of Australian art; its architecture encloses a spectacular exhibition space with more than 20 galleries. The complex is perhaps the most important construction in this city made up of irregular buildings with metallic surfaces. The mosaic of its cladding gives the building even greater dynamism made up of triangular parts put together in a variety of ways in different hues of grey and gold.
All these buildings face onto a square big enough to contain up to 15 thousand people. The square is paved with sandstone from Kimberley (Western Australia), rising gently above street level to offer a panoramic view of the city and the Yarra River.
