European Library of Information and Culture. Milan. Peter Wilson. 2001

Peter Wilson,

Milan,

Libraries,

A big library with freely accessible shelves and close interaction between printed texts and information technologies: this is the BEIC (Biblioteca Europea di Informazione e Cultura), to be built on the site of the old Porta Vittoria railway station in Milan, an area measuring more than 20,000 square metres.

European Library of Information and Culture. Milan. Peter Wilson. 2001 Peter Wilson has created a gigantic sculpture 36 metres tall covered in titanium; a huge atrium ushers visitors into various areas arranged by subject on three terraced levels.
The main route takes the visitor straight to the Reference section and the reading rooms, which are located in arms branching off from the building?s main volume. The surrounding space is set up in a lively, ever-changing way, with cosy enclosed areas such as the reading rooms and large galleries containing more reading spaces.
The complex will also contain a conference centre, a teaching centre, a mediaforum, a children?s library with its own garden and parking areas. All these services will be located in the building?s 5 metre high stone-clad base.
