Dorte Mandrup: A new landmark for the port of Copenhagen

Danish studio Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter has won the design competition for the new headquarters of the Danish Society of Engineers, IDA. The new building to be constructed in the port of Copenhagen will be called "The Opal" for its shape and "multi-faceted" structure like that of the precious oval-shaped stone. The Opal will be a new landmark in the port, like the Salling Tower in port of Aarhus , a panoramic tower also designed by Dorte Mandrup.

According to the judges, The Opal represents a successful synthesis of architecture and cutting-edge engineering technology.
The building will seem to float in the air thanks to a weight-bearing structure consisting of only four V-shaped steel columns. The façade, made up of opaque and transparent triangular elements and a high-tech fabric covering incorporating led lights, will have a dramatic impact, reflecting all the colours of the light spectrum and creating a non-stop play of lights, colours and reverberations with the water in the port.
