Diller, Scofidio + Renfro, The Broad Art Foundation, Los Angeles
A public ceremony celebrated the completion of construction of The Broad, the new museum designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro and presented to the city of Los Angeles by Eli and Edythe Broad, who also financed the Eli & Edythe Broad Art Museum designed by Zaha Hadid for Michigan State University (MSU).
The two key elements in the project give it its nickname, “the veil and the vault”.
The vault shapes the museum experience from entry to exit, contains the archives in its opaque mass, and becomes the floor plate of the exhibition gallery above.
The second element is the “veil”, a honeycomb exoskeleton covering the building?s three floors and filtering daylight to permit natural lighting of the gallery containing a number of contemporary artworks from the museum?s permanent collection.
