David Chipperfield - Anchorage Museum

May 22 2010 saw the opening of the the Smithsonian Arctic Studies Center and the ConocoPhillips gallery, additions to the Anchorage Museum and Rasmuson Center designed by David Chipperfield Architects. At the same time, a new public park in the centre of the city of Anchorage, designed by Charles Anderson Landscape Architects in partnership with David Chipperfield Architects, was also inaugurated, including the path to the museum entrance and a new statue by Antony Gormley more than 7 m high. The new building’s layout is based on five linear volumes of variable height and length along the western side of the original building, giving it a new facade on the side facing the city. The windows in the new building let people see what is going on in the museum while at the same time allowing visitors inside to look out at their urban and natural surroundings.
