Skyscraper, Banks,

A total surface area of about 100 square metres and 2500 workstations: the new European Central Bank to be built in Frankfurt was designed by Coop Himmelb(l)au of Austria.

Coop Himmelb(l)au, New ECB headquarters. Frankfurt. The plan was selected by an international jury and the bank?s board of directors for its optimal response to the monetary institute?s technical and functional requirements. Its formal and architectural solutions are, moreover, ideally suited to elegant but not obvious representation of the institution?s values. The new complex will rise in the eastern part of the city, in a 120 square metre area on the bank of the Mainz River.
The project incorporates three distinct elements which dialogue with one another : a 184 metre high structure twisting around itself, a horizontally oriented building and Grossmarkthalle, the city?s old main market. The vertical structure consists of two polygonal towers linked by an atrium.
The Groundscraper, as the adjacent horizontal building is called, contrasts with the towers but preserves the harmony of the whole and interacts with the old markets without compromising the aesthetic or the visibility of this historical heritage building. The west wing is best seen from south of the river. The atrium linking the two intertwined polygonal constructions will be the fulcrum of the complex, and will promote teamwork and communication with platforms linking the buildings and social spaces. The project also stands out for its response to functional requirements and its ability to provide high quality workstations.
