Wolf D. Prix, the architect who leads COOP HIMMELB(L)AU, received an award from the governor of Lower Austria (Niederösterreich) in recognition of the quality of the design for the recently completed protestant church in Hainburg.
In designing the building, the architects from COOP IMMELB(L)AU used digital aids to model basic shapes such as a big table for the main volume of the church. The roof of the prayer hall is inspired by a nearby Romanesque ossuary.
The complex geometries of the roof required use of special metalworking techniques in a shipyard, the only place where this kind of work could be done.
The effects of light and transparency are essential to lighten up the look of the structure. Three large openings in the roof let sunlight in to underline the mystic feel of certain spaces in the church.
