Ariostea Active: strong, hygienic porcelain flooring

One of our top priorities when purchasing products for the home and other places where we spend a lot of time is meeting certain standards of hygiene, easy cleaning and limitation of pollution.
Today we choose our indoor and outdoor floor and wall coverings on the basis of this criterion. There’s a simple reason for this: Active porcelain tiles interact with the environment, for they are, as their name suggests, an “active” material capable of making the environment around us healthier and more liveable.

Active Clean Air & Antibacterial Ceramic is a new generation finish made using a method based on innovative treatment with titanium dioxide (TiO2, an element that acts as a photocatalyser) applied to porcelain tiles at high temperatures.
In the presence of light, either natural or artificial, TiO2 triggers the natural phenomenon of photocatalysis, with the result that tiles treated with this substance not only maintain all their original aesthetic and material properties but eliminate bacteria from the floors and walls of the spaces we live and work in.
This natural process has been widely documented and scientifically recognised, and does not present any hazards during either production or use.
Active Clean Air & Antibacterial Ceramic was recently awarded a prestigious European patent in recognition of “l’the inventive activity underlying the creation of photocatalytic material(...) and the related production process ”, in which titanium dioxide is fixed onto porcelain tiles in the form of micrometric particles.

The material’s anti-pollutant effect is even greater on outdoor wall coverings: Ariostea ceramic tiles treated by the Active method actually repel dirt, because photocatalysis inhibits smog and destroys its ability to adhere to surfaces, making use of cleaning products superfluous.
This means that a little water, even rainwater, is enough to keep outdoor tiles clean at all times: it has been estimated that 100 square metres of Active floor or wall tiles in full light can clean as much air of oxides as 30 trees or shrubs with 22 m2 of leaves.
The 10 Ariostea Active collections (Pietra di Brugge, Calais, Sintra; quarzite bianca; rovere bianco, biondo, corda, grigio, moka and naturale) are applicable to any architectural project with the same degree of efficacy, even in areas subject to high levels of pedestrian traffic and stress (such as shopping centres, schools and hospitals).
