The glass surface of the Service Centre in the headquarters of the Region of Piedmont in Turin will have an aluminium screen to protect it from the sun’s rays

Aluminium screening on the façade of Fuksas’ tower in Turin

The new tower in Turin designed by Massimiliano Fuksas, has an innovative façade system of aluminium screens coupled with its double-glazed glass surface.
While the majority of the tower’s surface will be covered with glass, a certain amount of glass, on the floors containing the service centre, will be covered with an outer layer of aluminium cladding to screen it from the sun’s rays and decrease the greenhouse effect with its diamond-shaped motif.
The entire surface is covered with double-glazing consisting of a double outer layer of selective glass, glued to another layer of extra-clear glass (Stopray on clearvision + planibel clearvision) 6mm + 6.2mm thick. This is followed by a 16mm gap concluding in a third, internal layer of stratified glass, Stratobel L55.2, measuring 5mm + 5.2mm thick. The tower therefore has a total glass thickness of 38.4mm.
Clamps emerge from the outer profiles of the frames at intervals of 600 to 800mm, on which to anchor sunbreak panels with a diamond pattern, pressure-bent, painted and made out of sheet metal with a thickness of 20/10. The panels vary in height between about 4.30 and 4.50 metres, and their width depends on the interval between the frames on the façade, which is around 1.50 m. The diamonds on the panels in the plan open by about 16cm, allowing light to reach a sufficient percentage to satisfy lighting and heating requirements.
The frame, on the other hand, is made up of two parts. The first includes all elements for anchorage to the weight-bearing structures, connecting them with the second, which supports the glass. All this is designed to allow the clamps on which the sunbreaks are anchored to emerge, revealing their function as thermal insulation while preventing unpleasant temperature excursions in both summer and winter.
