- XIII BEAU exhibition Alternatives / Alternatives in Granada
Granada - and the Alhambra - is one of Spain's most popular tourist attractions. This summer, architecture aficionados have one more reason to call into the Andalusian city: the exhibition “Alternatives / Alternatives” that proposes a broad selection of contemporary architectural works selected by the XIII Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism (BEAU), an event that has been promoting architecture and urbanism in Spain for 26 years.
Alternatives / Alternatives showcases the 22 winning projects in the Works and Performances section of the Heritage, Urbanism and Innovation category, in addition to 20 shortlisted works and 59 proposals selected by the jury to be able to provide an overview of the architectural and urban production of Spanish architects in recent years.
All projects submitted to for the competition were required to be completed between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2015, and also include temporary installations and interior design if completed within that timeframe.
So there are residential projects such as Casa 1014 by Harquitectes or Casa Adamio by bosch.capdeferro arquitectures as well as social housing projects, like the 163 units designed by Olalquiaga Arquitectos. There is no lack of urban work, for example the new access into the old town of Gironella by Carles Enrich, school buildings, or industrial buildings like the facility designed by José María Sánchez.
The exhibition Alternatives / Alternatives, open until 12 October to then travel to New York, offers an exhaustive overview of Spanish architecture, whose great appeal we already saw at the opening of the 15th International Architecture Exhibition - Biennale di Venezia, winning the Golden Lion for best national participation (link).
