When a museum adds value to a city. First birthday of MACBA, Buenos Aires.
MACBA – Buenos Aires Museum of Contemporary Art celebrated its first birthday just a few days ago. The building adds creative and cultural pizzazz to two working-class districts in the south of the Argentinean capital.

The MACBA project by architecture practice, Vila Sebastián Arquitectos has added something new to the historical fabric of the San Telmo barrio, a district whose colonial-style architectural heritage is protected.

MACBA was built on a vacant lot in the “Distrito de las Artes”: a cultural initiative by the city’s governors to inject new life and add value to this transition zone uniting the neighbourhoods of La Boca and part of Barracas.

The building’s minimalist and contemporary exterior certainly doesn’t seek to blend into its surroundings; however, it is the perfect compliment for the permanent artwork collected by businessman Aldo Rubino and for the temporary collections showcased. The interior is divided into four exhibition rooms.

The single, 15 by 12 metre glass façade gives the interiors a close visual relationship with the urban fabric, tempting the passing public to step in and discover the art inside.

Unlike many of today’s museums, the MACBA is not just a container as such, it is committed to encouraging dialogue with the city, supported by lots of extra activities targeting the community – particularly young people – reviving the museum’s educational role in cultural edification.
