Ultra Violet, the PANTONE colour of the year 2018

As it does every year, a few weeks ago PANTONE announced the colour of the year 2018. It is PANTONE 18-3838, Ultra Violet, a dramatic purple shade communicating visionary thinking that points us toward the future. As Leatrice Eiseman, the Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute says, Ultra Violet is the expression of a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. PANTONE 18-3838 is a blue-based purple that suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now.
Not surprisingly, shades of ultra-violet have been doing the circuit in the creative world for years now. Think musical icons like Jimi Hendrix with Purple Haze and Prince with Purple Rain or some of Mark Rothko's paintings. And let's not forget the intrinsic spiritual qualities of this complex and contemplative colour, used to inspire connection in many mindfulness practices.
For the world of design, the Pantone colour Ultra Violet aims to launch much more than a passing trend to be a sign that emphasises the real needs of people at the moment, where colour is a valuable ally in creating not just objects but atmospheres.
