Sports and leisure facilities integrated into their surroundings. Major architekci.
In the nation-wide competition for a new sports and leisure centre in the centre of Wroclaw, Poland, two late 19th century school buildings had to be connected without giving up high quality standards and the practicality of a multipurpose building.

The solution offered by Major Architekci, winners of the competition, is based on use of a Corten screen.

This “openwork wall” ensures privacy while letting light through for the gym, and the material continually changes, looking more and more like the brick of the old buildings as time goes by, establishing a link between old and new. It also ensures that the walls have a uniform appearance when seen from the road or the adjacent park.

And so the new gym, with its outdoor areas, is seen only through this screened structure, and though contemporary at heart, does not create an interruption in its historic surroundings.

The interiors are also designed with great care, in an industrial idiom which does not attempt to stand out from its surroundings, while touches of colour are “brought in” by the people using the facilities.
The only exception is the orange corridor leading from the gym to the locker rooms.

This addition demonstrates how well-planned use of a versatile material such as Corten can create a harmonious bond with a high quality historic setting, favouring use of central urban spaces.
