Shelters For All Competition calls for safe urban housing

The Shelters For All Competition, part of the University of Notre Dame’s Open Sourcing the Design of Civil Infrastructure initiative, invites architects and designers from around the world to submit innovative solutions to the urban housing crisis affecting many parts of the developing world.

Over one billion people are currently living in urban slums around the world, and must often contend with limited natural resources as well as weak regulations and building codes, which hinder community planning. These unstructured settlements are often located in some of the most dangerous areas of the world, prone to hurricanes, typhoons, cyclones, earthquakes, flooding and other natural disasters.

Designs should be durable, feasible, sustainable and scalable housing solutions for those living in urban slums throughout the world, and should consider the environmental conditions, historical context and cultural preferences of the communities it is designed for. Although preference will be giving to widely applicable designs, participants may also choose to focus on a single country or region.

The winning designs will receive over $15,000 in prizes and earn the opportunity to be implemented as part of ongoing development projects through the University of Notre Dame. Participants may enter individually or in teams and must register and submit their proposals by Sunday, January 15, 2012.
