Remodelling a historical farmhouse: Kromme Rijn, Bakers Architecten
Dutch architect firm, Bakers Architecten designed the project to remodel a historical, cultural heritage farmhouse for residential use. The result is a perfect blend of old and new.

The remodelling of a 200-year old farmhouse near Utrecht, Holland, by Bakers Architecten, is an example of how a modern, switched-on home can emerge from respectful revamping of an existing building, without sacrificing that typical distinctive tone of historically important architecture.

The design extended the inhabitable area so that even though the old barn now houses the living zone, it has retained the whole original layout, meaning it still looks the same on the outside. At the same time, the bedroom is on the first floor, which used to be the hayloft over the main room. A glass wall separating these two areas acts as a continuous allusion to old and new.

The architects selected materials that would create an ongoing reference to the timeframe in which the roots of this building lie – the epoxy resin floor on the ground floor whose contemporary nature complements the old timber ceiling, or the concrete skirting that underscores the preserved roof beams.

Outdoors, the only concession to the changing needs of the modern inhabitants is the pool with timber deck, and even these fit in perfectly with the surroundings, due to the materials used.
