House in Mouraria, Lisbon. Refurbishment by José Andrade Rocha The refurbishment project by young Portuguese architect, José Andrade Rocha is proof positive of how pre-existing elements can be smoothly combined and adapted to a contemporary lifestyle. And all in just 55 square metres.

Mouraria is one of Lisbon’s oldest districts, one of the few that survived the 1755 earthquake. A historically significant setting that still shows some traces of the dominion of the Moors (from 711 to 1108).

And home to a 55-square metre house that has been refurbished by young Portuguese architect, José Andrade Rocha. An architecture and design effort whose details are clearly showcased in the images by photographer Ricardo Oliveira Alves, a highly impacting visual story.
A house marked by time and by the various owners and ideas. Without any false sense of modesty, José Andrade Rocha stripped it down to its bare bones and created a home with a connecting and contemporary spatial line. He positioned the open living and kitchen zone on the street side to take advantage of the natural light.

Then he cut back on circulation space and put the two bedrooms and bathroom in a kind of anthracite grey box, giving these rooms the privacy they need in a very small space, opening up our perception of the whole house and making it look a lot bigger than its 55 square metres.

This is also helped by the choice of materials and colours – timber floors, white walls – which underscore the home’s warm and cosy feel

We’ve fallen a little bit in love, and we got to wondering if “The History of the Siege of Lisbon” by Portuguese author José Saramago is on the bookshelves, because here you can feel all the magic of the age-old history of Portugal’s capital.
