Hotel Verde, the greenest hotel in Africa A green holiday, anyone? At Cape Town you can, in the Hotel Verde, the first hotel in the world to achieve double LEED Platinum Certification as a Green Building. A year after it received its first LEED Platinum certification for a new building, it has now achieved a second one for “Existing Building Operations & Maintenance”: excellence in eco-sustainability.

“I quickly realised that my dream to provide something luxurious and sustainable was not only possible, but it was also a business model worth sharing, with the potential to change lives and the industry as we know it”, says Mario Delicio, owner of both Hotel Verde, Cape Town Airport and the Verde Hotels chain for hotel management solutions.

A truly far-sighted decision that has paid off, as we can see with its second LEED Platinum certification, making the Hotel Verde the first hotel in the world to achieve double LEED Platinum certification: after the first one for New Construction in the Green Building Design & Construction, now it has now been awarded the second one for Existing Building Operations & Maintenance and it is celebrating its second anniversary this week.

Everything here goes beyond just plain sustainability and aims for “thrivability”, namely a life and business model that meets energy performance and low consumption criteria but that focuses more importantly on people, by creating jobs and improving the quality of life of local communities, and on a positive return for people who invest in the green business and in the planet, which is protected by the combination of all these elements.

Hotel Verde, by BON in Cape Town, South Africa is proof positive that a carbon neutral accommodation experience and “thrivability” are feasible targets, not just pipe dreams. And guests are also extremely satisfied, reflected in all the awards the hotel has received: Green Hotellier of 2015, the INTERNORGA Trendsetter Award and the highest 6 Star Rating of the Green Star SA Existing Building Performance with 82 points.
So, what are you waiting for? Hotel Verde is waiting for you!
