Exhibition Transformation – Robert Rechenauer An exhibition at the Architekturgalerie München celebrates the transformation of Salzburg's famous temple of music, Mozarteum by Munich-based architect Robert Reichenauer.  A project over and above the refurbishment for a new interpretation of the site.

The Mozarteum in Salzburg, established in 1841 is an internationally renowned museum that is home to an orchestra, an international foundation that organises concerts, collects music and performs research, and one of the world's most famous music schools.

It has been transformed many times during its life and all these changes meant the whole complex really needed a total rethink and refurbishment. A competition was organised and Robert Rechenauer, rose to this major challenge with a project based on a close study of the existing building, to create something new that could render justice to both the prestige of the school and the contemporary need to engage with its context and reach out to the community.

Rechenauer studied the history of the Mozarteum and responded with the opening of the complex onto the Mirabellplatz in Salzburg, now providing an urban whole that everyone can access, embellished by an entrance that is like an invitation to approach the world of music through the grand hall, or along new, dynamic pathways.

A clear, well-defined floor plan, sleek details and a limited range of natural and environmentally friendly materials to give it the effect of quality, where stone and wood set up a pleasant tension with the whitewashed walls. The building itself is simple in appearance, the perfect backdrop for experiencing the music.

In the exhibition at the Architekturgalerie di Monaco di Baviera  we can see some details of Rechenauer's design: a conscientious transformation with huge positive repercussions on the urban fabric where the renewal and reconstruction of the Mozarteum fits. A virtuous example of building in the prestigious historical setting.
